What are the benefits of stud welding?

Stud welding has many advantages over alternative joining processes. These include:

Superior strength and reliability

Stud welding creates a superior join that is stronger than the two metal parts independently. And as drill holes are not required, there is no risk of leaking or corrosion.

Speed

Stud welding is a very fast process, with each stud weld typically taking less than a second to secure.

Compatible with a range of materials

The technique is suitable for use with a range of different metals, meaning various material combinations are possible.

Cleaner design

As stud welding is a one-sided process, it’s possible to secure a stud weld without blemishing the structure. The result is an invisible and aesthetically pleasing fastening.

What is stud welding?

Stud welding is a fabrication process in which metal fasteners called weld studs are joined to a base metal.

Weld studs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs (eg. threaded, unthreaded, tapped), making them ideal for a wide range of applications.

Stud welding uses electricity to create an arc (short circuit) between the end of the stud and the surface of the workpiece, which melts both parts. Once a molten pool forms, the stud and the workpiece are pressed together to form the join.

Stud welding is a fast and reliable method, with the welded joints typically being stronger than the parent material itself. It’s also a highly versatile technique that’s suitable for use on a variety of metals including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and brass.
