What are the advantages of spot welding?

While spot welding has many advantages, it won't be the most appropriate method for every job. That’s why our experienced welding team assesses every project on an individual basis and will only recommend spot welding if it is the most suitable solution for your needs. Spot welding is a popular joining technique, offering numerous benefits for both the fabricator and the customer. Some of the advantages of spot welding include:

Straightforward process

Spot welding is a simple process to perform, with no filler material or fluxes required to make the join

Easily automated

Due to its simple construction, spot welding naturally lends itself to automation

Speed

Spot welding is a very fast process, with estimated weld times ranging from 0.01 seconds to 0.63 seconds

Cost-effective

Spot welding is a relatively low-cost process with a high production rate, making it an economical choice for many businesses.

What is spot welding?

Spot welding is an electric resistance welding process that’s typically used to join two or more metal sheets together.

The technique is suitable for use on thin sheet metal such as stainless steel, aluminium and mild steel, between 0.5mm and 3mm thick.

So how does it work? Copper alloy electrodes focus an electrical current in a small area between the metal surfaces that need to be joined.

The heat created by the electrodes melts the metals together at a precise point, or spot, on the workpiece.

At the same time, the electrodes exert pressure to keep the materials in the correct position.
