MIG welding service at Knees Engineering

Often favoured for its speed, versatility and cost-effectiveness, MIG (metal inert gas) welding is an essential part of our metal fabrication service.

Here at Knees Engineering, we have fully-equipped welding bays and a state-of-the-art robotic welding arm that allows us to complete large volume welding jobs quickly and accurately.

As specialists in MIG welding, we’re able to weld an extensive range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Plus, with years of experience and training behind them, our highly skilled welders can manufacture components and welded assemblies of various sizes and levels of complexity.

In addition to our MIG welding service, we have full facilities for TIG welding, spot welding and stud welding. We can also carry out a variety of linishing processes such as grinding and polishing, to ensure the end product is finished to the highest possible standard.

You can read more about the MIG welding process below or get in touch to discuss MIG welding as part of your fabrication project. Our factory is based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, but we work with businesses nationwide.

What are the advantages of MIG welding?

While MIG welding has many advantages, it will not be the most suitable method for every job. Our experts always take the time to assess each project on a case-by-case basis and will only recommend MIG welding if it is truly the best option for your needs. Some of the benefits of MIG welding include:

Speed

MIG welding is typically much faster than other welding techniques thanks to the continuously-fed electrode wire, which reduces the amount of stopping and starting that’s necessary

Versatility

The technique is suitable for joining a range of different metals and alloys in a variety of thicknesses

High deposition rate

As MIG welding enables ‘long weld passes’, more metal can be deposited with each pass. This also means fewer passes are required to weld a large joint, saving time and increasing productivity

Minimal clean up

While TIG welding is undoubtedly the cleanest form of electric arc welding, MIG welding isn’t far behind. Unlike traditional stick welding processes, MIG welding doesn’t use flux or create messy slag and produces less weld splatter.

What is MIG welding?

MIG welding is a sub-type of gas metal arc welding, a technique that uses electricity and heat to fuse metals together.

MIG welding works by using electricity to create an arc (short circuit) between an electrode wire (a positive anode) and the workpiece metal (a negative cathode). The arc melts the electrode wire to create the weld. The weld pool then cools and solidifies to form a new piece of fused metal. An inert gas, for example, argon, protects the weld puddle from being contaminated by the surrounding air, acting as a shield to enable the metals to be welded.

MIG welding is suitable for a wide range of metals in different thicknesses, making it a popular and cost-effective solution for a variety of fabrication jobs.
