What is powder coating?
Unlike conventional liquid coatings, a powder coating is applied in the form of a dry coloured powder. The powder usually contains a mixture of thermoplastic or thermoset polymer which is combined with pigments, curatives, levelling agents, flow modifiers and other additives.
These ingredients are melted into a liquid before being left to cool and ground down into a powder. The dry powder is then applied to the material using an electrostatically-charged spray and ‘baked’ in a curing oven. The heat causes the powder to bond together and adhere to the base material, creating a hard, even and scratch-resistant coating.
It’s this durable and high-quality finish that makes powder coating one of the most popular types of metal finishes used today.
